Bad behaviour 'blamed on genes'
Posted Tue Oct 28, 2008 9:26pm AEDT
People wanting to shirk responsibility for their behaviour will be happy to learn they can blame their parents for almost half of it.
An Australian psychologist has aggregated the results of hundreds of studies on human behaviour and found 40 per cent can be put down to human genetics.
"While there had been many studies done on specific behaviours such as alcoholism or smoking, we were interested to see if we could put a figure on the genetic influence on behaviour in general," said Dr John Malouff, from the University of New England.
"We looked at a whole range of normal and problem behaviours, and what we found was that again and again, the genetic component of these behaviours tended to clump around the 40 per cent mark."
He said this definitively makes genetics the single most powerful influence on a person's behaviour over their lifetime.
"If you look at what we know about what causes behaviour, it's hard to find another chunk so large," Dr Malouff said.
"While a short-term situation may have a strong influence on behaviour, in the long run genes are very important."
However, he was quick to add that genes were not "destiny".
"An example I give to my clients is hair colour," the specialist said.
"Hair colour is genetically determined. You're born blonde, red-headed, brunette. You can change that, but you have to keep working at it.
"Unless you dye your hair every couple of weeks, it's going to revert to its natural colour."
He said behaviour was similar.
"People need to keep working on their bad habits or behaviours if they want to change them, especially if they are predisposed to continue them," he said.
The findings are published in the journal Current Psychology.

Well I know Anthony's Aspergers symptoms are from us.. gosh I hated a school I went to cause it had a cement playground.. and got kicked out of class for pulling my socks up, when I thought that is what she meant. Thing is, teachers are not taught to be able to deal with kids with behaviours. Kids are supposed to conform, but that is such a hard thing for kids to do sometimes ... where is that brick wall I always come across lol

Yes I know it's certainly interesting eh.
It kind of makes me think that as generations come and go in different cultures that the long term cause, instilling of ideals associated with those cultures, influences and produces behaviours which are effected as genetic mutations.
